Camera shots and Editing techniques

What have you learned during the making of your preliminary task?

During the making of my preliminary task, I have learned how to use the 180 degree rule, match on action and shot reverse shot as effective editing techniques.
The 180 degree rule states that the camera should remain on the same side of an imaginary line (axis of action) which is drawn perpendicular to the cameras viewpoint in the establishing shot of the scene. Consequences of breaking the 180 degree rule include: confusion for audience, loss of audience focus, disorientation of a scene and audience could miss vital information.
Match on action is the continuous flow of action from one shot to another to create effect for the audience as they are kept intrigued by the constant action within scenes.
Shot reverse shot is often used in conversations and is used to show what a character is looking at (either a point of view shot or over the shoulder shot), and is followed by a reverse angle shot of the character themselves looking at it, or of the other character looking back at them, for example. This ties in with the 180 degree rule.

What were your areas of success?

Our areas of success was the use of match on action as we could see it throughout our preliminary task and built up tension for the audience regarding what was to happen next.

What are your areas for development be?

I think we could have improved our use of the 180 degree rule as although it was used how it was supposed to be, we could have used it more effectively than we did.

How well did you meet the brief?

I believe we met the brief reasonably well in our preliminary task as we included each of the three editing techniques we were supposed to and worked well as a group to come up with ideas as to how we can use those techniques effectively.

Evaluate your contribution to the groups work.

My contribution to the groups work is that I played the role of Detective Rose, wrote the preliminary synopsis, treatment and completed the storyboard for our task, I also helped with the editing, including the addition of various transitions and effects to differentiate scenes such as the flashback being black and white in comparison to the rest of the film.
